Teaching
Teaching has been a lifelong passion, rooted in my upbringing as the child of two dedicated teachers. From an early age, I was immersed in conversations about teaching methodologies, often comparing my learning experiences and teachers’ approaches with the practices my parents shared. This constant exposure cultivated my observant nature, allowing me to identify effective teaching techniques and the importance of tailoring methods to individual needs.
My teaching journey began at the age of 10, tutoring mathematics to peers and younger classes. Later, as a teenager, I actively mentored younger students in high school, guiding them in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, as well as their overall learning pathways, helping them develop strategies to succeed in their studies. During my postgraduate years, I added a pedagogical basis to this passion by enrolling in scientific teaching and inclusivity courses. These courses helped me to enhance my ability to engage diverse learners and create an inclusive classroom environment.
My postgraduate career has taken me across the USA, the UK, the EU, and Japan, in addition to industry experience in the Middle East, exposing me to a rich diversity of educational and cultural contexts. This experience has shaped my understanding of global teaching practices and enhanced my ability to connect with students from varied backgrounds. I learned to design courses to scale up effectively for large cohorts in the USA. In the UK, the emphasis on mentoring highlights its importance as a key pedagogical aspect of higher education. The EU’s evolution towards English-based learning made me aware of the increasing competition in higher education markets, while the Middle East and Japan emphasise structure and tradition, aspects often missing in the West. I use these insights to design courses that ensure the audience fully benefits from the material.
Additionally, as a mentor, I have guided over 50 early-career engineers, helping them navigate the initial stages of their profession, and assisted over 10 senior engineers in adapting to new systems and work environments. I designed bespoke assessments to help engineers progress toward chartership in the UK, informed by my own successful experiences with globally recognized institutions. Furthermore, I learnt to recognize that research-based education is as important in the University classroom as it is for practising professionals. I also taught courses in fire and environmental safety for architects as Foster and Partners working as an in-house consultant and trainer.
Drawing on over 15 years of hands-on international industry and academic experience, as well as team leadership, I am well-positioned to deliver impactful teaching that bridges theory and practice.
